Henry Yates, an archaeologist turned treasure hunter, pursues a baffling clue that he believes leads to the lost treasure of King Croesus. At the excavation of Sardis in Turkey, he meets and falls in love with the bright and beautiful Emine. She joins him in the search and they become trapped in a treacherous world of antiquity thieves and forgers, a vast underground labyrinth, and a menacing cult that repeatedly tries to kill them.

While Henry and Emine fight for their lives, the New York Museum of Art hires journalist, Duncan Macaulay to prove rightful ownership of its Lydian collection. Macaulay's investigation takes him to Turkey in search of Henry, but he too comes under deadly attack. Macaulay finally finds Henry, crazed and exhausted, but resolute in his madness. Henry and Emine have found Croesus’ hidden treasure, but Emine has been captured by the murderous cult that has followed them. Henry convinces Macaulay to help him free Emine, thwart the cult, and retrieve the treasure.

This is a terrifically fun book, with compelling main characters and an eclectic and entertaining cast of secondary players. A bit of backstory: My prior exposure to what I can now see is the rich story-telling potential of archaeology is through the movie franchise Raiders of the Lost Ark. Croesus Gold easily surpasses the narratives of these films.

The story focuses on Henry Yates who, when we meet him, is a young man stumbling through the last bits of an advanced degree in archaeology. An intersection of passion and luck leads him into a lifelong pursuit to find the lost gold of King Croesus, an obsession that will span years and continents.

The reader follows Henry as his life unfolds, structuring his professional and personal world around his treasure hunt adventure. Throughout the tale, we learn about the history of the Lydian people, are thrown into the world of academics, government officials, dealers and forgers who all play a role in the protection or disposition of the artifacts of antiquity, and also come to understand Henry’s motivation, along with those of other characters whose lives are obsessively transfixed—for better and less so—by the search for ancient treasure.

“What I really can’t stand is being bored,” Henry whispered. “Though I know what interests me is boring to most people.” In author Glenn Harnden’s capable hands, Henry’s motivating sentiment turns out to be far from true. The writing is extremely good, the narrative pacing is excellent, the history is captivating, and the details of the various settings—from archeological digs in Turkey to New York museums to academic corridors and back again—transport the reader.

Ultimately, like all good stories, Croesus Gold taps into larger themes related to how we seek in our own quotidian quests a recognizable connection to the vast unfolding and ongoing story of humans across millennium. Henry’s quest for treasure holds up a mirror to the past and readers, through Henry's eyes, find reflected there the comforting constancy of human attributes and passions as well as their limits—the certainty of betrayal, the seemingly unquenchable lust for power, and the parallels of restorative redemption through the bonds of loyalty and love.

I recommend Croesus Gold highly. I hope there is a sequel to this page-turning adventure story!

Croesus Gold edition by Glenn P Harnden Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Retirement is a funny thing. So many of us, not used to "queening it" in front of the TV, set out on entirely new endeavors. For first-time author Glenn Harnden, that new endeavor has been writing an absolutely riveting tale of archaeological mystery, Croesus Gold. I'm sure you've heard of Croesus, if only in the expression "as rich as Croesus." King of Lydia (now in Turkey) until he was overthrown by the Persians, Croesus is credited with issuing the first gold coins. Fabulously wealthy, he has become the stuff of legend.

Harnden uses well documented archaeological sites and expeditions as the bones of his story, Croesus Gold, weaving a riveting and very believable tale of modern day archaeological intrigue spiced with a touch of romance.

Grandma's $0.02 - I thought for a few pages that Croesus Gold started a bit slow, but long before page 20 I was hooked, staying up late to read the entire book in a single sitting. Absolutely enthralling, with a real cliff-hanger of an ending! Two thumbs up!

Highly Recommended
Easy to read, interesting and suspenseful. It flows very easily between the present and the historical events of the past.
Croesus Gold is a spellbinding book involving mystery, history, archaeology, and present day activities. The characters leap off the pages to keep the reader company throughout the book. Glenn Harnden has done a masterful job of research. This is a book not to be missed. Florence Ashby
Fascinating story - combines present day, history and myth. Fun characters pull you through the action. Never boring. Highly recommend.
Croesus Gold is a hugely entertaining mystery. It is a bit reminiscent of the Indiana Jones themes but much better read as it is based on true historical facts and it makes that much more interesting. It is a page turner full of suspense. Great twist at the end. Like others have said it would make a super film. Could not put it down, I highly recommend it. I am a thriller junkie so recognize a good one!
Glenn Harnden has come out with a thrilling page turner with twists and turns throughout this action-packed archeological mystery. Once you read the first page, you won't want to put it down. In the tradition of Clive Cussler and Dan Brown, Harnden does a masterful job in combining archeology and high adventure to create a suspense-filled journey as the archeologist turned treasure hunter Henry Yates strives to solve the puzzle of the lost gold of King Croesus. During this quest his new wife is kidnapped by local neo-pagans who want to revive an ancient Lydian cult and have his beautiful young wife as high priestess of a religion dedicated to preserving a glorious past and protecting the hidden treasure from the likes of Henry Yates. She goes along with her captors for a while to protect Henry which leads to an unexpected surprise ending.

The book is full of unexpected moments like this, I enjoyed the ending because I have been hearing about the emergence of neo-pagan goddess cults like the one's listed on Hellenion group's website and Facebook page. These Hellenistic pagans have been battling the Greek Orthodox church for the right to worship publicly at the ancient shrines in Greece, so the events in Croesus Gold involving a Lydian revival seem plausible enough to me.

Harnden is clever, and this first novel by him is a roller-coaster, just keep your hands on your kindle and enjoy the ride. This novel would make a great movie.
